Alyssa Poffenroth
I am a counselor in training here at Charmed and am completing a MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through Capella University. My expected graduation date is September 2026. Originally, I trained and practiced as a special education teacher before transitioning careers to mental health counseling. I received a BS in Elementary Education (2017) and a Masters in Education and Special Education (2019) from George Fox University.
Supporting individuals with unique needs and abilities such as developmental and intellectual disabilities has always been a passion of mine. While working as a special education teacher, I saw a need for accessible and developmentally appropriate mental health support for students within this population. I found that the most enjoyable and fulfilling part of my role was working with social, emotional, and behavioral needs which led me to pursue education to blend my passion for working with this population and my interest in mental health counseling. I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents within the education system, as well as adults facing a variety of challenges at an inpatient psychiatric level of care. My focus in practice is providing mental health counseling to children, adolescents, and young adults with developmental disabilities.
I believe that every person, regardless of their background and ability, holds inherent worth and value. Upholding the dignity of each individual and respecting their whole person is a cornerstone of my counseling practice. I believe that behavior is a symptom of unmet needs or lacking the ability to communicate and express oneself. As a counselor, I seek to understand what is happening below the surface and to guide the client in exploring their inner world and developing appropriate modes of expression and communication. The therapeutic modalities that I primarily follow include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Person-Centered Therapy (PCT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Play Therapy (PT).
I am supervised by Jessica Weed, LMHC (LH61380825). All consultations with my supervisor are confidential. I offer both in-person and virtual sessions.
