Madelyn “Maddy” Jensen

INTERN

I (Madelyn “Maddy” Jensen) am a Charmed Counseling intern and a Master of Social Work candidate at Eastern Washington University, with an expected graduation date of June 2024.

I work under the direct supervision of Mary Manix Derby, a licensed mental health counselor (LH60645979) and registered play therapist. I also receive supervision from Charmed owner and licensed independent clinical social worker, Joeleen Wilkinson (LW 60649635).

I feel passionate about supporting children and families and have worked in this capacity throughout my professional career. In addition to my work as a therapist, I serve as a Social Service Specialist at the Department of Children Youth and Families and as volunteer guardian ad litem through Spokane Juvenile Court. To better meet the needs of children in our community, I have pursued further training in Child-Centered Play Therapy.

Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is a developmentally appropriate, play-based, mental health intervention designed to help children ages three to ten with emotional, behavioral, and social struggles. Using a carefully selected collection of toys, I will facilitate your child’s play to build a therapeutic relationship, highlight their thoughts and feelings, set limits, and encourage self-concept and responsibility. Allowing kids, the freedom to discover their inner world using play allows them to work through trauma, abuse, intense emotions or behavioral struggles while increasing their feelings of security and control in a medium that is natural for them.

As a parent, you are the expert on your child, and the most important person in their life. I look forward to partnering together as we work to help your child become the happiest, healthiest version of themselves.

Many children have troubles and worries but because of their development stage are unable to process their experiences through words.

Even though they can’t always talk about it, kids still need to Children communicate through play and use toys as their words. In play therapy, your child will use carefully chosen toys to metaphorically play out what is bothering them. I will facilitate your child’s play to build a therapeutic relationship, highlight their thoughts and feelings, set limits, and encourage self-concept and responsibility.

I believe in an individual’s ability to evolve and change. Counseling may help you find ways to increase motivation in life, boost emotional regulation, manage stress appropriately, set life goals, build interpersonal skills, strengthen relationships, heal from past trauma, and create a positive outlook. Working from a person-centered framework, the primary modalities I utilize are Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT).
