Madelyn “Maddy” Jensen
LICSWA
I (Madelyn “Maddy” Jensen) am a Licensed Clinical Social Work Associate in the state of Washington (SC 61563987). I graduated with a Master’s in Social Work from Eastern Washington University in 2024 and have received extensive training in play therapy and child mental health. I am working towards earning both a Registered Play Therapist and Child Mental Health Specialist designation. Additionally, I am a certified Circle of Security facilitator.
I am passionate about pediatric mental health and specialize in child-centered play therapy. I believe that every child has a unique voice and story, and is capable of positive self-direction. My approach is rooted in the understanding that play is a child’s natural language, and is essential to providing a safe space for children ages three to 12 to express their feelings, explore their thoughts, and navigate their challenges.
Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate, play-based, mental health intervention designed to help children with emotional, behavioral, and social struggles. Using a carefully selected collection of toys, art supplies, and sand, I will facilitate your child’s play to build a therapeutic relationship, highlight their thoughts and feelings, set limits, and encourage self-concept and responsibility.
Play therapy teaches children that their feelings are acceptable, and how to express them responsibly. It encourages them to be creative and resourceful problem solvers, use self-control and self-direction, and to accept themselves just as they are. Not only that, play therapy increases a child’s emotional vocabulary, worldview, and self-esteem! Allowing kids the freedom to explore their inner world using play gives them the space to work on what they need to while increasing their feelings of security and control.
As a play therapist I’ve had the privilege of working with children facing a variety of behavioral and emotional issues caused by bullying, grief and loss, divorce, physical and sexual abuse, crisis, and trauma. My clients also experience relief from the symptoms of mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, academic and social impairment, physical and learning disabilities, and conduct disorders.
I believe that caregivers know their child best and are an essential part of the therapeutic experience. Our work together will include regular caregiver consultations where we’ll collaborate together, sharing insight and strategies to support your child’s growth outside of session.
